High tech? for your airsoft experience....

Lately I have seen discussion of a couple of IPhone apps and equipment that are geared towards airsoft. I'm not going to review (nor am I endorsing) them but, will post them up here for you to draw your own opinions.....

First for the Apps:
Overwatch

Overwatch is the next generation in interactive and social gaming.  Now, all of the technology gamers love from combat video games is available in real life, right on a smartphone—Live GPS Radar, Bluetooth Voice Chat, and In-Game Perks.  The games of airsoft, paintball, and laser tag just became a whole lot more tactical.  Now it's not just game time.  It's game time for real.

Overwatch is not just another smartphone game, it is a tactical utility to enhance airsoft, paintball, and laser tag gameplay.  Instead of being distracted from your game by trying to play through your smartphone like a Head-up Display, Overwatch provides vital game information at a glance—just like a radar does in combat video games.  Here's a glance at the features and design:

BattleTac

BattleTac provides real-time GPS tracking, instant messaging and navigation on the battlefield. Using BattleTac you will always know where your comrades are on the battlefield and what they are doing. So BattleTac gives you essential information to make better tactical decisions and to be victorious.
  • Live GPS tracking of combat units
  • Target command delivery - you can easily send commands to your units like "go to that location" or "go and meet unit Whiskey"
  • Battlefield navigation - if you have a target, the system helps you hit it
  • Instant messaging, textual command and report delivery - you can send out texts like "attack in 30 s" or "see 3 enemy 100 m N"
The BattleTac system uses internet technologies, so to use it, you need to have mobile internet access. The system runs on your mobile and communicates with other units over the internet.

  1. I have battletac but I haven't had a chance to actually use it in the field. One of the issues is that it just sucks the battery dry. It also means carrying an expensive and fragile piece of equipment into the field. I love the idea. I have plans for near future games where you bring all the gadgets you can dream up. It's just expensive. I'll check out Overwatch, the UI looks easier than Battletac.

  2. Seems to be a good idea to carry technology into a battlefield, but the question is: is really necessary?

the apps and gadgets provided are just a good idea for improve our airsoft game. useful in complicated battlefields specially open field grounds, but in CQB it would be useless, with the risk of the terrain involves.

but the problem indeed is how distractive for the player could be? i think nobody wants to get hit for just one second distraction, 'coz you had to check the app.

    Joe out.

    1. I think the value might be for the commander at large milsim games, being able to keep track of the individuals. But I do agree that I wouldn't want to get caught looking at my phone or for that matter taking the phone into the middle of a game.
